The Nine Panel Project’s purpose is to bring together a diverse array of storytellers and artists to craft short-form comics about an experience relevant to the social determinants of health: economic stability, safety in community, trauma and family history, and access to quality education, healthcare, and shelter.

In collaboration with the American Heart Association, Comix from the Heart, has convened 80+ patients, doctors, researchers, and artists from across the globe for the purpose of creating comics that provide critical insight to the patient experience across several categories of interest to the organization: hypertension, long-COVID, the needs of rural communities, and overall well being.

Our Big Idea
Graphic Listening is the application of short-form sequential art as a tool for organizations and communities to gain authentic insight on a topic of interest, while communicating challenging subject matter more clearly and vividly.
Phase 01: Strategy & Talent
We work with partners in the social or public sector to define the topic of the comic, and identify a recruitment strategy for people with stories relevant to the topic of focus. Simultaneously, we are building a global network of artists and creatives.
Phase 02: Prepare & Convene
Storytellers access a video tutorial that walks them through the process of writing a short-form comic script. Next, we engage artists and storytellers in a workshop to finalize the script and develop initial sketches for the comic. After the event, artists add final touches to the page before submitting for publication.
Phase 03: Review & Publish
Each comic is peer-reviewed for accuracy, and we ensure the narrative is communicating clearly. Finally, we publish the comics to our website and print a small run of physical copies to distribute to everyone involved.
